The Lithium Writer

Services

As a writer myself, I know how hard it can be to find a quality editor who doesn’t cost thousands. Do I believe editors should charge what they believe they’re worth? Yes, absolutely. It’s true that editors and freelancers must make a living. Editing is a side job for me — I work full-time as an SEO specialist and copywriter for a digital marketing agency. (I am also learning web design and teaching myself coding, but that’s for another day!) I aim to offer quality editing services to emerging self-publishing authors who don’t want to break the bank on editing.

Writing fiction is a passion of mine, which is why I attained my B.A. in it, graduating summa cum laude and a member of Sigma Tau Delta, the National English Honor Society. I create and edit content to support my writing (and, you know, pay my bills). I am currently taking a self-paced course on copyediting from the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA).

You can find more information below on pricing, what my services entail, and frequently asked questions. All prices are non-negotiable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What genres do you accept for book editing, proofreading, blurb writing, or manuscript critiques? Or for a free book review?

I am open to just about anything, other than sometimes having difficulty with detailed scenes of suicide and self-harm. Other than that, I am especially excited about thrillers, mystery, women’s fiction, romance (including any LGBTQ+), and anything involving themes of mental health. If your manuscript has any depictions of self-harm and/or suicide, please let me know in your email.

What platform do you use to edit?

All work is done in Microsoft Word. Comments are left in the document and sent back to you once services are completed.

Why are your prices set at what they are?

I am just starting to get my editing services off the ground, so to provide a competitive rate is essential. Also, I understand that not all authors can afford the lofty prices that more experienced editors charge. I hope to make quality editing services affordable and accessible.

How do you take payments?

I require 50% up front and the rest once work is completed. I take PayPal only.

What are your qualifications?

I graduated with a 3.9 GPA, a member of Sigma Tau Delta (National English Honor Society), and summa cum laude in 2018 with a B.A. in English and Creative Writing, concentration in fiction. I have been a professional copywriter since 2018, and I also specialize in SEO. I follow AP Style for content creation services and Chicago Manual of Style for fiction manuscripts. I studied Spanish for seven years, AP Latin for four years, and French for one. As of 2023, I am working through a self-paced copyediting class from the Editorial Freelancers Association. You can read a little bit about me on my About page.

Do you offer sample edits?

Yes! I offer a free sample edit of up to five pages. The text must be Times New Roman, 12 pt, double-spaced.

How can I get in touch with you?

You can email me at allisonwilliford@icloud.com. Please do not email me unless it is related to my services.

What if I don’t have Microsoft Word?

I can do Google Docs. Please do not send me any other file types such as Scrivener files.

What stage should my manuscript be in?

  • For proofreading, your manuscript should be in its very final stage before the publishing process begins. This means it should have already gone through several rounds of revisions and edits by your own pen, been read by several alpha and beta readers, and edited some more before going through a copy editor.

  • For copy editing, your manuscript should be on its last step before sending it to a proofreader. Your overall plot, characterization, and other literary elements should be at the very best they can be.

  • For manuscript critiques, I prefer that you’ve already gone through a few rounds of revisions at the very least. No first drafts are accepted. Part of the great process of writing a novel is seeing the flaws in your work until you’re blind to them.
